It has been proved that there is a relationship between normal cola and gout. One of the reasons is because cola contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which has been linked to higher gout risks.
But many, if not most, sweet drinks like cola and other sodas contain HFCS, which is why the advice for many years has been to avoid sweet, fizzy soda drinks if you suffer from gout.

So, does it follow that if you change from normal cola or soda to diet cola / soda you cut out the risk of gout? Well, it depends who you believe. In my research I came across many gout sufferers who said that when they changed to diet cola their gout went away. On the other hand, I've come across others who have said the opposite.
And, in terms of the professionals, some researchers say that there is a link between diet colas / sodas and gout, whilst others say that there isn't such a link. Of course we need to understand who these researchers are and who they get their funding from, right?
But what isn't in dispute is that diet cola and similar diet drinks contain Aspartame, which is a non-calorific sweetener, in general use in soft drinks and food preparations since the 1980's.
The interesting thing here is that, although it has been passed by the appropriate governing bodies, there is still an ongoing debate around potential serious side effects, including brain tumours and epilepsy.
It seems to me that that is reason enough to stay away from all drinks and foods containing Asparame, e.g. diet cola and diet soda. But does that mean you can stay with your normal cola?
My answer to that is no. If you suffer from gout you need to avoid all such fizzy drinks. So no.
But, just avoiding cola and other such drinks won't prevent your gout returning. There are many other issues to be considered in your war against gout. And cola / diet cola avoidance is only one aspect. For example, your weight, diet, and lifestyle, among other things, need to be fully addressed to prevent recurring gout.
And stopping your gout returning time and time again is vital in preventing you ending up with permanent joint damage and possible kidney damage down the road. So you seriously need to address these issues.
